Square Bill Pay

Pay business bills on schedule, with the vendor trail in one place

Square Bill Pay gives a U.S. business a practical way to organize outgoing vendor payments without adding a separate accounts-payable system. Upload a PDF, JPEG, or PNG bill, forward an invoice to a unique Bill Pay email address, or enter the details yourself; Square extracts key fields for review before you schedule payment.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

You can fund a payment from Square Checking, an external U.S. bank account, a debit card, or a credit card, then send it by ACH, digital check, or mailed paper check when available. For a bakery ordering ingredients, a contractor paying subcontractors, or a salon covering recurring rent, the useful distinction is control: vendor information, due dates, categories, payment status, and CSV export stay visible in Square Dashboard. It is not a replacement for tax-payment workflows or dispute resolution, and the sender remains responsible for checking vendor details and allowing enough delivery time.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Capture bills instead of retyping every field

Upload a PDF or image, take a bill photo in a supported Square app, or forward an attachment from email. Square extracts the amount, due date, and available vendor details, but you review and correct the result before confirming payment.

  • Choose the funding source that fits cash flow

Square Checking, an eligible external bank account, and debit-card payments are currently listed with no Bill Pay fee in Square's U.S. help content. Square Credit Card and external credit-card payments are listed at 2.9% in the help article; card eligibility and the fee shown at checkout still govern the transaction.

  • Schedule recurring fixed bills

Set weekly or monthly recurring payments with a start and end date or a payment count. This suits predictable rent or lease bills; variable recurring amounts such as utilities are not supported.

  • See what is due and export the trail

Dashboard summarizes outstanding, due-soon, and overdue amounts. Ten preset categories, including Inventory, Supplies, Utilities, Insurance, and Rent & lease, can be filtered and exported in a CSV for analysis or import elsewhere.

  • Offer vendors more than one delivery path

If bank details are available, electronic delivery typically reaches the vendor in one to two business days according to the help article. If the vendor does not provide bank details, Square can support a digital check or a mailed paper check when the vendor's physical address or P.O. Box is supplied.

Built for day-to-day vendor bills

A food business can categorize ingredient and supply bills; a home-service operator can keep subcontractor, insurance, and equipment expenses together; and a salon or studio can schedule predictable rent. These are workflow examples based on the documented Inventory, Supplies, Freelancers & staff, Insurance, and Rent & lease categories—not claims that Square provides a specialized vertical Bill Pay edition. Bill Pay is for commercial, non-personal payments to U.S.-located vendors payable in U.S. dollars.

Where the workflow lives

Square Dashboard is the main place to add, schedule, categorize, report on, and manage recurring bills. On iOS, Bill Pay is available in Square Invoices, Square Appointments, and add-on libraries for Square POS and Square for Retail; on Android, it is available in Square Invoices and the Square POS add-on library. Reporting and category management are Dashboard-only. No Square payment hardware is required for the documented Dashboard workflow.

Plan around timing, limits, and responsibility

Square's terms say delivery typically takes up to two to four full banking days and recommend initiating at least five full banking days before the due date; the help article gives one to two business days for a vendor bank account and four to six business days for a paper check. Tier 1 limits are $5,000 per day and 50 bills per day; Tier 2 is $50,000 per day and 50 bills per day. Card-funded Bill Pay has a $75,000 calendar-month cumulative limit in both tiers. Two-step verification is required to unlock consideration for higher tier limits, which Square assigns using account security settings and payment history.

Square Bill Pay has no separately published monthly subscription price. Square's U.S. help documentation lists Square Free, Square Plus, and Square Premium subscribers as supported, while the core Bill Pay article requires an activated U.S. Square Account and an eligible payment source. A business can therefore use the feature without selecting a paid Square POS plan, subject to account approval and availability.

  • Debit card

The U.S. help article and payment-method article currently list debit-card funding as free; the card must be an eligible U.S.-issued card and Square may restrict categories or sources.

    0% / $0 per Bill Pay payment
  • Square Credit Card or external credit card

Current U.S. help documentation lists 2.9%; the legal terms say the fee for an eligible credit or debit card is displayed at transaction time and may change with notice. Square Credit Card rewards are subject to its own terms and approval.

  • An eligible U.S. payment source: Square Checking, a U.S. bank account, or an eligible U.S.-issued Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express debit or credit card.
  • A commercial, non-personal payment payable in U.S. dollars to a vendor located in the United States.
  • Vendor identity and payment information, including bank information for direct ACH; Square can request the vendor to provide it securely.

Square Bill Pay is a money-transmission payment service for commercial vendor payments, not a general consumer bill-pay tool.

The service may not be used for tax payments, court-ordered payments, or securities transactions under the Bill Pay Terms.

Card networks may prohibit paying certain vendor business categories by debit or credit card; use an eligible bank source when card funding is unavailable.

The sender is responsible for verifying auto-populated vendor data, selecting an early enough initiation date, and handling vendor disputes, late charges, tax reporting, and returned funding.

A vendor without bank details may receive a digital check or mailed paper check. Digital checks can be void after 90 days if not deposited; the legal terms also describe unclaimed-payment cancellation rules.

Square can place holds, refuse or reverse payments, impose limits, and require identity or vendor-information review. Limits depend on account security settings and Square payment history.

Square Checking is provided through Sutton Bank, Member FDIC; Square states that Block is a financial-services platform and not an FDIC-insured bank. Deposit-insurance coverage is subject to the stated conditions.

No Bill Pay hardware requirement or Bill Pay-specific hardware price was found in the official U.S. sources reviewed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Square Checking to use Square Bill Pay?

No. Square's U.S. documentation also supports an eligible external U.S. bank account, debit card, or credit card. Square Checking is required if you want to fund Bill Pay with proceeds from Square sales, because the Square Account Balance itself is not an eligible payment source.

How much does Square Bill Pay cost?

There is no separately published monthly Bill Pay subscription price, and Square lists Square Free, Plus, and Premium as supported plans. Current U.S. help pages list bank-account and debit-card funding as free and credit-card funding at 2.9%; the Bill Pay Terms say card fees are shown at the time of the transaction and may change.

Can I automate recurring vendor bills?

Yes, for fixed amounts. Dashboard supports weekly or monthly recurring series with a start and end date or a payment count. Variable recurring amounts, such as utility bills that change, are currently unsupported, and recurring series can only be created and managed in Dashboard.
