A retail POS that keeps every size, color, and channel in step

Clothing retail moves on fast-changing collections, precise size and color availability, and customers who may browse in one place and buy in another. Square for Retail gives a boutique or apparel shop a connected way to build item variations and SKUs, sell at the counter or online, and keep stock synchronized across locations and channels.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Teams can use barcode labels, purchase orders, stock counts, returns, exchanges, and sales reporting to turn daily merchandising work into a more dependable routine. Add customer profiles, discounts, gift cards, Loyalty, Marketing, and Afterpay when they fit the store’s strategy. The right plan depends on whether the business needs advanced receiving, vendor workflows, transfers, and multi-location controls.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Keep sizes and colors visible

Build apparel items with variants and SKUs, scan products into the catalog, and use real-time stock updates to reduce the risk of selling a size or color that is no longer available.

  • Receive the next collection with less rekeying

Square for Retail supports bulk inventory work, vendor profiles, purchase orders, stock receiving, and barcode-label printing on supported printers. Those tools are especially useful when a seasonal delivery contains many style, size, and color combinations.

  • Sell in-store, online, and at pop-ups

Connect counter sales with an online store, in-store pickup, shipping, or local delivery, and use a Handheld, Terminal, Stand, Register, or phone-based Tap to Pay setup according to the selling context.

  • Make returns and repeat visits easier

Process full or partial refunds and exchanges, maintain customer purchase profiles, and combine discounts, gift cards, Loyalty, Marketing, or Afterpay to support the way apparel shoppers return and buy again.

  • Read demand before reordering

Use item and category sales reporting, sell-through views, aging-stock signals, and COGS tracking to decide which brands or collections deserve another order and which need a markdown or a different display.

Each Plus and Premium plan has a 30-day free trial; plans can be changed or canceled. Businesses processing more than $250,000 per year can ask Square about custom pricing and processing fees, but eligibility is not guaranteed.

Requirements

  • A U.S. Square account and a supported internet-connected device or Square hardware are required to use the service.
  • Square Stand requires a compatible USB-C iPad; Square Reader for contactless and chip connects by Bluetooth to iOS 16+ or Android 9+.
  • Square Plus and Premium are required for advanced retail workflows such as the plan-specific inventory, purchasing, transfer, and cross-location features described above.
  • Hardware installment plans are subject to credit approval and other factors, use a 15% APR, require purchases from $49 to $10,000, and are unavailable to merchants in Alabama, Delaware, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Tennessee according to Square’s hardware disclosure.
  • Offline payments require reconnecting within 24 hours of the first offline payment; the seller remains responsible for expired, declined, or disputed offline payments.

Features, pricing, processing rates, hardware availability, and plan packaging are captured from official Square U.S. pages on 2026-10-27 and can change.

Square’s retail page does not promise that every apparel business will qualify for custom pricing, Afterpay, loans, or other financial products; eligibility and approval requirements apply.

Hardware installment examples are financing terms, not cash prices; tax is due at checkout where applicable, and credit approval is required.

Offline payments carry seller risk if a payment expires, is declined, or is disputed, and older first-generation Square Reader for contactless and chip devices do not support the feature.

No image is marked approved because the official pages reviewed did not provide marketing-license evidence for a specific image asset.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which Square plan is the practical starting point for a clothing store?

Square Free is the no-monthly-cost starting point for core checkout and reporting. Plus at $49 per month per location is the more relevant step when the store needs inventory management and stock intake, vendors and purchase orders, and COGS reporting. Premium at $149 per month per location is aimed at multi-location workflows such as cross-location returns and transfer orders.

Can a clothing shop sell online and keep store stock synchronized?

Yes. Square’s U.S. clothing and retail pages describe an online store or connected existing site, in-store pickup, shipping or local delivery, and automatic synchronization of orders, inventory, and customer data across sales channels. The store should confirm the exact website and fulfillment configuration before launch.

What hardware is useful for apparel checkout and stock work?

Register suits a fixed two-screen counter; Handheld is useful for mobile checkout and includes a barcode scanner; Terminal is a compact all-in-one device with receipt printing; Stand pairs an iPad with a swiveling POS; and the $59 Reader supports mobile card acceptance. Barcode scanners and supported label printers can complement receiving and labeling workflows.
