Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Automated confirmations, reminders, waitlists, deposits, cancellation rules, and no-show protection help protect the day’s schedule. At checkout, barbers can take tap, chip, card-on-file, digital-wallet, cash, or Afterpay payments at the front desk or at the chair. Client profiles can retain preferences and booking history, while Square Marketing, Loyalty, Messages, and Square Go help turn a first cut into a repeat visit.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Keep chairs and calendars in sync

Create staff calendars, color-code availability, and assign an appointment to a particular barber or chair. Multi-location scheduling and unlimited calendars are documented on the U.S. barbershop and Appointments pages.

  • Reduce gaps and no-shows

Online booking, automated confirmations and reminders, waitlists, deposits, prepayments, cancellation policies, and no-show fees give a shop practical ways to protect time that would otherwise go unused. Availability depends on the selected Appointments plan.

  • Take payment at the chair or counter

Square supports phone-based Tap to Pay, readers, Terminal, Handheld, Stand, and Register. The barbershop page lists card, card-on-file, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Cash App Pay, cash, and Afterpay as supported payment choices, subject to applicable processing rules.

  • Make repeat visits more personal

Client profiles can retain preferences and booking history. Square Marketing, Loyalty, Messages, and the free Square Go marketplace can support rebooking, targeted outreach, and ongoing client conversations.

  • Sell grooming products alongside services

Square’s barbershop guidance specifically describes tracking and selling beard balm, hair care products, and other retail items in-store or online, while service packages can bring revenue forward.

A booking flow built for barber schedules

A shop can publish a booking site or embed a booking button/widget on an existing website, add a Book Now button to Instagram or Facebook, and print a QR code at the front desk. Clients can be asked to prepay or keep a card on file for a no-show policy. Square Assistant can handle rescheduling requests, and waitlists can help fill openings. Square’s Appointments page lists Free, Plus, and Premium plans, with Pro available through custom pricing.

Choose a station setup that matches the shop

Square Reader for contactless and chip is a portable starting point for chair-side payments; Square Handheld adds a built-in scanner and camera for mobile checkout and product inventory; Square Terminal adds a built-in receipt printer for a compact counter; Square Stand is an iPad-based counter setup; and Square Register is a two-screen integrated POS for a busy front desk. Reader and Stand require a compatible connected device or iPad, while Terminal and Register require internet through Wi-Fi or Ethernet for normal operation.

Know the connectivity and payment limits

Square documents offline payments for supported hardware for up to 24 hours, but transactions must upload after reconnecting within that window; the seller remains responsible for expired, declined, or disputed offline payments. Older first-generation Square contactless-and-chip readers do not support offline payments. Square Stand’s Kiosk Lite mode does not support offline payments. The Stand also needs a compatible iPad, network connection, and power outlet, and the Handheld requires Wi-Fi with high-speed internet for normal use.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a barbershop let clients book online and still take payment in person?

Yes. Square documents a standalone booking site plus booking buttons, widgets, or QR codes for online scheduling, while Square POS and supported hardware can take payment at the chair or front desk. A shop can also require prepayment or keep a card on file for a stated no-show policy.

Which Square hardware is the best fit for a barber station?

For a mobile chair-side setup, Square Reader for contactless and chip or Square Handheld is the most directly supported fit. Terminal is better for a compact front counter with printed receipts; Stand suits a compatible iPad at reception; Register is the integrated two-screen choice for a busier checkout desk.

What does Square charge a U.S. barbershop?

The entry Appointments plan is $0 per month, with paid Plus and Premium tiers at $49 and $149 per location. Published in-person card rates range from 2.6% + $0.15 on Free to 2.4% + $0.15 on Premium. Online, manual-entry, card-on-file, and Afterpay transactions use different published rates, and hardware is purchased separately.
