Coffee Shops & Cafés

Keep the morning line moving from first pour to last order

Coffee shops need a checkout that can handle a rush without losing the personal touch. Square helps you build a menu for drinks, modifiers, pastries, and retail beans, then take orders at the counter, on a phone, or through a branded online ordering profile.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

A Square POS keeps pickup and local-delivery orders connected to the same menu and customer history. During the busiest minutes, Square KDS can route tickets to prep stations, while Kiosk or Kiosk Lite gives guests another way to customize and pay. Use sales, item, labor, and customer reports to see which drinks sell by time of day and where your next operational improvement should be.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Move the morning queue faster

Use a countertop POS or portable device for quick order entry, tap/dip payments, and an offline fallback when connectivity drops. That makes it easier to keep customers moving during the breakfast and commuter rush.

  • Keep drinks and modifiers accurate

Build a menu with sizes, milk choices, syrups, temperature, toppings, and food add-ons. Online and in-person menus can stay synchronized, so an item marked sold out or repriced in Dashboard can be reflected across ordering channels.

  • Turn orders into a coordinated prep flow

Square KDS receives orders from POS, the Square online ordering page, and supported delivery apps. Ticket layouts, timers, routing, and an expeditor view can help separate espresso, food, and handoff work in a compact café kitchen.

  • Give regulars a direct reason to return

A branded ordering profile supports pickup and local delivery without marketplace commissions on direct orders. Customer profiles, loyalty, gift cards, and marketing tools can connect a guest's order history to future offers and reorders.

  • Use data to manage beans, labor, and peak periods

Sales, catalog, inventory, customer, and labor reporting can show bestselling beverages, busy hours, stock levels, team activity, and item performance across locations and channels. Those views can inform prep quantities and staffing decisions without relying on guesswork.

A plan for a single counter or a growing café group

Square Free has no monthly subscription cost and includes core selling tools, while Square Plus is $49 per location per month and Square Premium is $149 per location per month on the current restaurant pricing comparison. Plus and Premium add deeper restaurant operations; KDS and kiosk software are additional per-device fees. Businesses processing more than $250,000 annually can ask Square about custom pricing and processing fees, hardware discounts, onboarding, and account support. Confirm the subscription shown at checkout because Square pricing and feature availability can change.

Self-service for a busy café line

The new Square Kiosk uses a 21.5-inch display, voice and touch ordering, integrated tap/dip/PIN payments, menu-aware suggestions, and live connection to POS and KDS. It costs $1,999 with a counter stand, or $97 per month over 24 months subject to credit-sale terms, plus $99 per device per month with Square Plus; it requires an active Square Plus or Premium subscription and is currently English-only in the U.S. Square Kiosk Lite is the lower-cost iPad route: it runs on Square Stand with a compatible iPad and costs $50 per active device per month on Plus or $30 on Premium.

Online ordering without a second menu system

Square's online ordering profile can function as a branded ordering page for pickup and local delivery. Menus, orders, fulfillment settings, and customer data sync with Square POS; direct orders do not carry marketplace commissions, although Square online processing fees still apply and an on-demand delivery service provider may charge a separate delivery fee. The coffee-shop page's claimed savings of up to 30% is an estimate based on an assumed third-party marketplace commission, not a guaranteed saving.

Current U.S. published pricing checked 2026-10-27: Square Free is $0/month; Square Plus is $49/month per location; Square Premium is $149/month per location. Requirements

  • Square Plus and Premium monthly prices apply per location; Square Free has no monthly subscription cost.
  • Square KDS requires an active Square Plus or Square Premium subscription and an Android device.
  • Square Kiosk requires an active Square Plus or Premium subscription; legacy restaurant subscriptions may need to switch to a current Square plan.
  • Square Kiosk Lite requires Square Stand and a compatible iPad; both are sold separately.
  • Hardware financing is subject to credit approval and stated Block credit-sale eligibility, including excluded states and applicable taxes.
  • Square devices generally require internet access; offline payments must reconnect within 24 hours and carry seller responsibility for expired, declined, or disputed payments.
  • Square Reader for contactless and chip pricing and offline support apply to the 2nd-generation reader; older 1st-generation v1/v2 readers do not support offline payments.

Square's coffee-shop page says offline payments are declined if the device is not reconnected within 24 hours; sellers remain responsible for expired, declined, or disputed offline payments.

Direct online-ordering profiles avoid marketplace commissions, but online Square processing fees still apply. On-demand delivery may add a delivery-service-provider fee that varies by provider and fee structure.

The coffee-shop page's up-to-30% delivery commission saving is an estimate based on an assumed 30% third-party commission, not a guarantee.

Square Kiosk is currently available in the U.S. and English only. Square recommends touch ordering in especially extreme noise environments even though the device uses AI noise filtering.

Kiosk, KDS, and Kiosk Lite subscriptions are additional to the qualifying Square plan and are priced per active device where stated.

Hardware prices are before taxes and fees and may change. Financing figures are not cash prices and require credit approval and other stated eligibility conditions.

No cash-discounting or surcharge program terms were found in the reviewed official sources; do not imply a specific percentage, savings, legal approval, or fee elimination without the supplied agreement and administrator confirmation.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which Square plan is a good starting point for a small coffee shop?

Square Free is the no-monthly-subscription starting point for core selling and payment tools. Square Plus adds restaurant operations for $49 per location per month, while Premium is $149 per location per month and has lower published in-person processing and advanced restaurant features. The best fit depends on locations, ticket routing, reporting, and whether you need KDS or kiosk devices.

Can a coffee shop take orders online and send them to the bar or kitchen?

Yes. Square's branded online ordering profile can support pickup and local delivery, sync menus and orders with Square POS, and send online orders to a kitchen printer or Square KDS. Online processing fees still apply, and delivery-provider fees may apply for on-demand delivery.

What happens if the café loses internet during a rush?

Supported Square devices can use offline payments, but the device must reconnect within 24 hours of the first offline payment so transactions can upload. Offline payments are not risk-free: the seller is responsible for expired, declined, or disputed payments, and older Square Reader for contactless and chip generations do not support offline payments.
