Wine & Liquor

A steadier pour from shelf to sale

Run a bottle shop or liquor store with a checkout that understands products sold by the bottle, case, or other unit. Square for Retail helps you scan barcodes, prompt staff to verify age-restricted purchases, and keep stock synchronized as sales move between your counter, online catalog, pickup, and eligible shipping destinations.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Higher retail plans add purchase orders, vendor workflows, cost-of-goods reporting, transfer orders, and cross-location returns. Add loyalty, gift cards, and targeted marketing to turn tastings and neighborhood recommendations into repeat visits. For alcohol delivery and online sales, configure the required labels and fulfillment rules, verify local licensing, and follow the laws where you operate.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Sell age-restricted products with a deliberate checkout step

Assign an age restriction such as 21+ to alcohol items. At the point of sale, staff can confirm age in-app; Square for Retail Plus or Premium, or Square Plus or Premium with the relevant capability, also supports date-of-birth entry and scanning U.S. or Canadian driver’s licenses or state IDs with a compatible 2D scanner or iOS camera.

  • Keep bottle, case, and location counts aligned

Track inventory in the units your store sells even when stock arrives in a different quantity. Square’s retail tools update stock across locations and channels, support barcode intake, low-stock alerts, vendor and purchase-order workflows, and—on higher plans—unit costs, COGS reporting, transfers, and cross-location returns.

  • Make the counter faster for a bottle-heavy catalog

Use barcode scanning to add products to a cart and to receive stock. Square Handheld combines a mobile POS with a built-in scanner, while Register and compatible accessories support a more conventional counter setup with a scanner, receipt printer, and cash drawer.

  • Extend the shop beyond the front door

Connect an online catalog with in-store pickup, local delivery, and shipping where lawful. Alcohol items must be labeled in the item library. DoorDash is the documented on-demand alcohol-delivery route in the listed U.S. states, while in-house delivery and pickup remain subject to the seller’s local and national compliance duties.

  • Build repeat visits around discovery

Use item or category discounts, digital or physical gift cards, Square Loyalty, and Square Marketing to promote new arrivals, seasonal selections, and neighborhood events without separating those campaigns from your sales data.

Choose the retail plan around your operating model

Square Free is $0 per location per month and includes core POS, catalog, discounts, refunds, and reporting. Square Plus is $49 per location per month and adds advanced retail inventory, stock intake, vendor and purchase-order management, and COGS reporting. Square Premium is $149 per location per month and adds cross-location returns and fulfillment, transfer orders, and 24/7 phone support. Square says businesses processing over $250,000 annually can ask about custom pricing and processing fees. Plus and Premium offer a 30-day free trial; plans can be changed or canceled.

Alcohol workflows need more than a website toggle

Square Online can support alcohol items for online sales, pickup, local delivery, and shipping where permitted, but sellers must research their jurisdiction’s licensing and restrictions. Square’s U.S. help documentation says its website age-verification pop-up is not legally compliant; the seller must verify buyer age for QR ordering, in-house delivery, and in-store or curbside pickup. On-demand alcohol delivery is only through DoorDash in the states listed by Square, and a failed delivery age check can trigger a $3.50 return-delivery fee charged to the seller.

Hardware that fits a bottle shop

Square Register (2nd generation) is $899 and includes dual screens; Square Handheld is $399 with a built-in barcode scanner; Square Terminal is $299 with a built-in receipt printer; Square Stand is $149 and requires a compatible iPad; Square Reader for contactless and chip is $59; the first Square Reader for magstripe is free. Register and Handheld support tap and dip, while magstripe requires the separate reader. Hardware financing is subject to credit approval and published state, purchase-amount, APR, and installment restrictions. Offline payments require reconnection within 24 hours and carry seller responsibility for expired, declined, or disputed transactions.

U.S. retail plans verified October 27, 2026: Square Free $0/month/location; Square Plus $49/month/location; Square Premium $149/month/location; custom pricing may be available above $250,000 annual processing volume. Hardware prices are before applicable tax and can have financing terms subject to credit approval.

Requirements

  • A Square account and an eligible U.S. business location are required; account, payment, and product terms apply.
  • Square Retail age restrictions require Retail mode and the applicable inventory capability; date-of-birth entry and ID scanning require Square for Retail Plus or Premium, or Square Plus or Premium with the applicable capability.
  • Online alcohol selling requires alcohol items to be labeled in the item library and requires the seller to confirm licensing and local, state, and federal rules.
  • Square Register and Terminal need power and network access; Square Stand requires a compatible iPad; Square Handheld requires Wi-Fi with high-speed internet for normal operation.
  • Square hardware installment plans are subject to credit approval, a 15% APR, purchase amount limits, and state availability restrictions published by Square.

Square’s tools do not replace a liquor license, legal advice, or the seller’s obligation to verify age and follow the rules governing alcohol sale, delivery, pickup, shipping, and advertising.

Square Online’s age-verification pop-up is not legally compliant by itself. For QR ordering, in-house delivery, and in-store or curbside pickup, the seller is responsible for legally compliant age verification.

Square documents on-demand alcohol delivery through DoorDash only in the listed states; availability and legal requirements can change by jurisdiction.

Square’s documented $3.50 alcohol return-delivery fee applies to an on-demand delivery return after failed age or recipient verification; it is not a general alcohol-processing fee.

Offline payments reconnect automatically, but payments may expire or be declined if the device is not reconnected within 24 hours; the seller bears associated risk.

Hardware prices and payment rates are U.S. published figures verified on 2026-10-27 and may change; custom pricing is not represented as guaranteed eligibility.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a wine shop prompt for age verification at checkout?

Yes. In Square for Retail, assign an age restriction to alcohol items and use the in-app prompt. Manual confirmation is available; date-of-birth entry and scanning a U.S. or Canadian driver’s license or state ID require Square for Retail Plus or Premium, or Square Plus or Premium with the applicable capability. Staff must still follow local law.

Can I sell alcohol online with Square?

Square says alcohol can be sold through Square Online and eligible third-party marketplaces when permitted by law. Label each alcoholic item, use permitted physical-good or prepared-food-and-beverage item types, and configure pickup, delivery, or shipping only after confirming licensing and local rules. Square’s website age pop-up alone is not legally compliant.

Which Square setup is practical for a bottle shop?

A counter store can pair Square Register or Square Terminal with a barcode scanner, receipt printer, and cash drawer. A staff member who counts stock or checks out customers on the floor can use Square Handheld’s built-in scanner. Square Stand is an iPad-based option, while Square Reader is a lower-cost mobile payment path. Choose the Retail plan level based on whether you need purchase orders, COGS, transfers, and cross-location returns.
