Accessories — Barcode Scanners

Scan products faster with Square-compatible barcode scanners

Square’s U.S. accessory catalog includes three dedicated barcode scanners for faster item lookup and checkout: a $169 2D corded model, a $299 2D cordless model, and a $299 2D hands-free model. Each reads common 1D and 2D formats, while the cordless and hands-free options are designed for different counter workflows.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

Compatibility depends on the Square device and connection method: USB scanners work with listed Square hardware, while Bluetooth support is narrower. A scanner is useful for businesses with packaged goods, SKU-heavy catalogs, or frequent inventory counts, but it is not a payment device and does not replace a Square POS account or compatible hardware hub where one is required.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • Choose the right scanning style

The U.S. catalog offers a corded handheld scanner, a cordless scanner with charging base, and a hands-free presentation scanner. That gives a counter team a practical choice between lowest upfront cost, reach around a checkout area, and presentation-style scanning.

  • Read 1D and 2D barcodes

The listed Honeywell scanners read standard 1D, PDF, and 2D symbologies; the cordless and hands-free product pages also specify DotCode support. The corded Voyager XP 1470 is rated for 30 drops from 6 feet and 1,000 tumbles from 1.6 feet.

  • Speed item lookup and inventory work

Square says a scanner can quickly add products to a sale instead of scrolling through the item library. In Square Retail POS, a compatible scanner can scan a GTIN to help create an item, and the workflow checks for an existing GTIN to reduce duplicate entries.

  • Use the camera when dedicated hardware is not needed

Square also supports camera barcode scanning on compatible iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, so a business can start with a device it already has. Dedicated scanners remain the better fit for repetitive counter scanning or hands-free presentation use.

Compatibility and connection limits

USB support is device-specific. The product pages require a Square Terminal hub for Terminal and Handheld USB connections. Square’s general support article says Bluetooth scanners are currently compatible only with iPads and iPhones, and USB connections on Android require Android 9.0 or older plus USB OTG/host support. When Square Kiosk is running the Square Kiosk app, external accessories cannot connect directly; other Square POS software uses the compatibility rules shown by Square.

Pricing and availability are a U.S. snapshot verified October 27, 2026 and may change.

The $16/mo and $27/mo figures are advertised financing amounts, not hardware subscription prices. Square states that financing is unavailable to merchants in AL, DE, MS, MO, NH, and TN; sign-in, qualification, credit approval, purchase amount limits, APR, installment term, and sales tax conditions apply.

Square’s compatibility table can differ by scanner model and Square device. Confirm the exact model before purchase, especially for Square Stand, Square Kiosk, iOS, and Android with Square Reader.

A barcode scanner identifies items; it does not accept card payments. Payment processing rates and POS software plan charges are separate.

Square’s documented GTIN auto-creation workflow does not establish that every barcode has retrievable catalog data; duplicate GTINs are flagged and item details may still require review.
