Square Instant Transfers

Move eligible Square sales to your bank when cash flow cannot wait

Square Instant Transfers gives a U.S. Square seller an on-demand way to move an eligible Square balance to a linked external bank account or debit card, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Built for your day-to-day

How it fits your business

That can help a bakery cover an early-morning ingredient order, a food truck refuel between events, or a salon meet a same-week expense without waiting for the normal payout. The convenience is not free: Square lists a 1.95% fee per instant transfer, in addition to applicable payment-processing fees. You need a verified transfer method, and Square may apply account-specific limits or withhold the feature for newer or API-based accounts until enough history exists.

Key capabilities

What you can do

  • On-demand access seven days a week

Eligible funds can be sent on demand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rather than waiting for the standard next-business-day schedule.

  • Send to a bank account or debit card

After verification, a seller can direct an instant transfer to the linked external bank account or linked debit card configured in Square transfer settings.

  • Useful alongside normal payouts

You can keep the standard schedule for routine deposits and use Instant Transfers only when a business expense or short cash-flow gap justifies the fee. Any balance not sent instantly follows the normal transfer schedule.

  • Track transfer activity in Square

Square provides transfer history and fee details in Dashboard transfer reports, with transfer confirmation available after an instant transfer succeeds.

  • No dedicated payment hardware required

Instant Transfers is a funds-movement feature accessed through Square Dashboard or the Square Point of Sale app; Square's U.S. pricing page also states that hardware is not required to use Square generally.

How it works

First add and verify a bank account or debit card in Square. A user with balance permissions can initiate the transfer from Dashboard with Transfer Now, or from the Square Point of Sale app under Banking > Instantly Transfer. Square sends a confirmation when the transfer succeeds. The destination bank or card issuer still controls when the money becomes available after Square sends it.

Limits and eligibility to plan around

The standard published parameters are a $25 minimum eligible balance after Square's processing and transfer fees and a $10,000 maximum transfer size. New Square sellers start with one instant transfer per day of up to $2,000, and a higher daily amount may become available as the account builds history. Square says Instant Transfers may not be available to sellers using Square APIs until sufficient account history exists. Individual payments above $10,000 are not eligible for instant or same-day transfer and are sent on the next-business-day schedule instead.

Cost and practical trade-off

Square lists Instant Transfers at 1.95% of the amount per transfer. This is separate from the card, online, ACH, or other payment-processing fee that applied when the customer paid. For a business that can wait, standard next-business-day transfers are free; for a business that needs money immediately, the transfer fee buys speed but does not guarantee the receiving bank's posting time.

No separate monthly subscription is identified for Instant Transfers in the official U.S. product and support pages. Square Free has no monthly subscription cost, while Plus and Premium are optional paid plans; transfer eligibility and the transfer fee are separate from the payment-processing plan. Square Checking is an alternative Square banking product, not a requirement for Instant Transfers.

Requirements

  • A U.S. Square seller account with an eligible balance.
  • A verified linked external bank account or linked debit card.
  • Balance permissions to initiate transfers from Dashboard or the Square Point of Sale app.
  • The account must meet Square's eligibility and risk controls; new-seller limits may apply.
  • Square API sellers may need sufficient account history before Instant Transfers becomes available.

Instant Transfers are not the same as Instant Payouts from delivery partners.

The minimum balance and maximum transfer amount are measured after Square's processing and transfer fees; account-specific limits can be lower, especially for new sellers.

The receiving bank or debit-card issuer controls final availability after Square sends the transfer; Square notes that funds are subject to the bank's availability schedule.

Funds that are not eligible or not selected for instant transfer follow the normal transfer schedule, generally one to two business days for the remaining balance.

Cash App receipt is available for standard transfers only, not Instant Transfers, and can take up to four business days excluding weekends and holidays.

Payment-processing rates are separate and depend on payment method and Square plan; they are not included in the 1.95% transfer fee.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does Square Instant Transfers require a paid Square plan or special hardware?

Square's published U.S. materials do not identify a separate monthly subscription or dedicated hardware requirement for Instant Transfers. You do need an eligible Square account, a verified transfer method, and the required balance permissions. Instant Transfers are accessed through Square Dashboard or the Square Point of Sale app.

How much can a business transfer instantly?

Square publishes a $25 minimum eligible balance after fees and a $10,000 maximum transfer size. New sellers start with one transfer per day of up to $2,000, and Square may increase the available daily amount as the account develops history.

Is the 1.95% fee the only fee involved?

No. The 1.95% charge is the Instant Transfer fee. It is in addition to the payment-processing fee that applied when the sale was accepted. If speed is not needed, Square's standard next-business-day transfer is published as free.
