Choose the payment methods, software plan and hardware that match your business. Processing fees are separate from optional software subscriptions and equipment costs. “Square Rack Rate” is our label for this option; Square uses its own official plan and transaction names.

Square Free: $0 per location per month; Square Plus: $49 per location per month; Square Premium: $149 per location per month. Published hardware starts at $59 for Square Reader for contactless and chip. Processing varies by plan and payment method; add-ons, international cards, transfers, and location/device fees may apply.

Published U.S. plans and payment rates
Square Free is $0 per location per month, Plus is $49 per location per month, and Premium is $149 per location per month. Plus and Premium each have a 30-day free trial and can be canceled or switched. Published card rates depend on how payment is taken: in-person tap, dip, or swipe is 2.6% + 15¢, 2.5% + 15¢, or 2.4% + 15¢ for Free, Plus, or Premium; online or invoice card payments are 3.3% + 30¢, 2.9% + 30¢, or 2.9% + 30¢; manually entered or card-on-file payments are 3.5% + 15¢ on all three tiers. ACH via invoice is 1% with a $1 minimum, with a $10 cap on Plus and Premium; ACH via API is 1% with a $1 minimum and $5 cap. Afterpay is 6% + 30¢. Cash and check payments have no processing fee. EBT is 1.8% + 5¢ for in-person SNAP-eligible purchases.
Hardware choices and compatibility
Official U.S. list prices show Square Reader for contactless and chip at $59, Square Stand at $149, Square Terminal at $299, Square Handheld at $399, Square Register (2nd generation) at $899, and Square Kiosk at $1,999 including a counter stand. The contactless-and-chip reader connects by Bluetooth to iOS 16+ or Android 9+ and needs a phone or tablet; Stand requires a compatible USB-C iPad; Terminal, Handheld, Register, and Kiosk are standalone devices. Kiosk requires an active Square Plus or Premium subscription; Kiosk Lite requires Plus or Premium and runs with Square Stand.
Meaningful limits to check before purchase
Square’s published price is not a total cost guarantee. Plus and Premium fees apply per location, and add-ons can cost extra: Square KDS is $30 per device per month on Plus or $20 on Premium; Kiosk is $99 per device per month, while Kiosk Lite is $50 on Plus or $30 on Premium. International cards add 1.5%. Instant transfers require a linked bank account or supported debit card and a fee. Offline payments exclude services mode, Kiosk, Tap to Pay, manually entered cards, Afterpay, Gift Cards, and other listed payment types; pending payments can expire if not uploaded within the stated window.

Prices and fees are the official U.S. published figures verified on 2026-10-27; Square may change them and existing sellers may receive separate transition notices.
The $59 hardware figure is the published starting price for Square Reader for contactless and chip, not a complete POS setup cost.
Square Kiosk's $1,999 price includes a counter stand; total price varies by stand type selected.
Offline payments are not risk-free: a seller is responsible for expired, declined, or disputed payments accepted offline. Supported devices, modes, payment types, and upload windows are limited.
Square Banking, loans, bitcoin, instant transfers, and other financial services have separate eligibility, provider, regulatory, or account conditions not represented as included in the POS subscription.
